The Cathedral Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida (Portuguese: Catedral Basílica do Santuário Nacional de Nossa Senhora Aparecida) is a large Roman Catholic basilica in the city of Aparecida in Brazil. It is the main temple in Brazil and the second largest Catholic church in the world after Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. It was construction began on November 11, 1955 in honor of Our Lady of Aparecida, and was consecrated on July 4, 1980. The Cathedral Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida was built in the form of a Greek Cross designed by the architect Benedito Calixto Neto. Its length is 188 m (617 ft), width 183 m (600 ft), and height (max) 109 m (358 ft). The basilica can capacity 30,000 people. The Cathedral Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida is one of the main centers of pilgrimage in Latin America.
