Brief information about Cyprus

Cyprus is an island in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, located 380 km north of Egypt and 105 km east of Syria and Lebanon, and 75 km south of Turkey. It has an area of 9,251 km² and is home to approximately 1.1 million people. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea by area and the second largest by population. The length of the island from east to west is 240 km and the width from north to south is 100 km. Much of the island is covered by mountain ranges. Along the northern coast of the island are the Kyrenia Mountains, the highest point of which is the Mount Selvili (Kyparissovouno) with a height of 1024 meters. The Troodos Mountains occupy the southwestern part of the island. Mount Olympus, with a height of 1952 meters, is the highest point of the Troodos Mountains.

The island is actually divided between the partially recognized state of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which occupies 36% of the island, Great Britain (Akrotiri and Dhekelia military bases) and the Republic of Cyprus, which occupies 57.6% of the island.

Climate in Cyprus

Cyprus has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and very warm, humid winters. The hottest month of the year is July with an average temperature of +28 °C and the coldest is January with an average temperature of +12 °C. Rainfall is heaviest in the mountains, while the coastal areas of the island tend to be dry throughout the year. The wettest season is winter, with most rain falling in December and January.
