Hagia Sophia Cathedral is one of the main attractions of Istanbul, it is located in the Sultanahmet district in the historic center of the city. In the time of the Byzantine Empire it was the Patriarchal Orthodox Cathedral, which was located in the centre of Constantinople near the Great Palace of Constantinople. After the capture of Constantinople by the Ottomans, Hagia Sophia was transformed into a mosque, and in 1935 received the status of Museum. Today it is a monument of Byzantine architecture and a symbol of the «golden age» of Byzantium. Hagia Sophia and many other historical monuments of Istanbul was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List In 1985.
