Dobo Square Live Webcam, Eger

Eger is one of the most beautiful historic cities in Hungary, located 80 miles (130 km) east of Budapest. The city is renowned for its magnificent Baroque architecture, rich history, and famous wine cellars. The main chapter in Eger’s history is the siege of 1552, when a small garrison under the command of Captain István Dobó repelled the attacks of a 40,000-strong Ottoman army. This heroic defense became a symbol of Hungarian resistance and served as the basis for Géza Gárdonyi’s novel Eclipse of the Crescent Moon (original title: Stars of Eger). In 1596, the city fell to the Ottoman onslaught and remained under Turkish rule for 91 years, after which it experienced a Baroque renaissance following its liberation.

István Dobó Square (Dobó István tér) is the main square of Eger, located in the historic center at the foot of Eger Castle. The central feature is the monument to István Dobó, created by sculptor Alajos Stróbl and unveiled in 1907. This monumental sculptural group depicts the legendary captain raising his sword to the sky. The architectural ensemble of the square consists of beautiful examples of Baroque design: the Pauline Church (Minorita templom), built to a design by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer and consecrated in 1772; the Town Hall; and historic residential buildings with arcaded galleries, which today house cafes, restaurants, and shops.

Today, Dobó Square is a vibrant cultural hub. During the summer months, outdoor cafes operate here, and concerts and festivals are held. The square offers a magnificent view of Eger Castle, perched high on a rock, and the Smithy’s Tower (Kovácsok tornya).
