About Medina

Medina (Madinah al-Munawwarah), located in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia, is the second-holiest city in Islam after Mecca. Known as the “Radiant City”, it was the home of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) after the Hijrah in 622 CE and the place where he established the first Islamic state. Today it has about 1.5 million residents, growing to several million during Hajj and Ramadan seasons.

The heart of Medina is Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet’s Mosque), built by the Prophet himself and later expanded into one of the largest mosques on Earth. Its distinctive Green Dome marks the location of the Prophet’s tomb and those of Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). The city radiates peace and simplicity, with white buildings, palm-lined streets, and an atmosphere of barakah (blessing) felt by every visitor.

Under Saudi Vision 2030, Medina is seeing careful, respectful development — new hotels, expanded prayer areas, the high-speed Haramain railway linking it to Mecca in just over two hours, and improved services for pilgrims while preserving its sacred character. Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the central sacred area, making Medina a place of profound spiritual significance for the world’s 1.9 billion Muslims.

Climate in Medina

Medina has a hot desert climate similar to Mecca, with very high summer temperatures and mild, pleasant winters.

Summer (May–October) brings intense heat, with daytime highs often between 104–115°F (40–46°C) and sometimes higher. Nights offer some relief but remain warm.

Winter (November–March) is the best time to visit, with comfortable highs of 77–90°F (25–32°C) and cool evenings around 59–68°F (15–20°C) — perfect for long prayers and walking between holy sites.

Rainfall is extremely low — less than 4 inches (100 mm) per year — mostly in short winter showers. Medina enjoys more than 340 sunny days annually, giving bright, clear light over the Prophet’s Mosque almost year-round.
