About Portovenere

Portovenere is a small town in the province of La Spezia in the Liguria region of northwestern Italy. It is located on the Ligurian Sea opposite the island of Palmaria, 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) south of La Spezia. The town is named after the Roman goddess of love, Venus, with its name translating from Italian as “Port of Venus” (or “Harbor of Venus”). The town has a population of about 4,000 people and covers an area of 7 square kilometers (2.7 square miles).
