About Lobnya
Lobnya, the administrative center of the Lobnya Urban District, is a compact city of 81,143 residents, covering 31.56 km². Located 15 km north of Moscow’s MKAD or 25 km from Savyolovsky Railway Station, it sits on the southeastern slope of the Smolensk-Moscow Upland. The city’s name derives from the Lobenka River, possibly linked to the Baltic word “loba” or “lobas”, meaning “valley” or “riverbed”.
Settled since ancient times, with Slavic tribes (Vyatichi and Krivichi) present in the 10th–12th centuries, Lobnya was formed in 1932 by merging villages like Kiyovo and Bukino. It gained city status in 1961. During World War II, fierce battles during the Battle of Moscow took place here, with anti-aircraft defenses protecting the capital.
Lobnya’s proximity to Moscow and Sheremetyevo Airport fuels its economic growth, supported by over 60 enterprises, new residential developments, and robust transportation infrastructure, including a key railway station on the Moscow-Savyolovo line.
