About Naples

Naples is the third largest city in Italy after Rome and Milan, and it serves as the administrative center of the Campania region in southern Italy. It is located along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea on the mainland, bordered by the regions of Basilicata to the southeast and Lazio to the northwest. Naples lies on the northern shore of the Bay of Naples on the southwestern coast of mainland Italy, near the western slope of Mount Vesuvius, about 215 kilometers (134 miles) southeast of Rome.

Naples has a population of approximately 1 million people, and its area is 117.27 square kilometers (45.3 square miles). Including its suburbs, the population of the metropolitan area exceeds 3 million people. Naples is the largest city in southern Italy.
