About Koryazhma
Koryazhma is a city in the southeastern part of the Arkhangelsk Region of Russia, located on the left bank of the Vychegda River, about 30 kilometers east of Kotlas. The city has a population of around 39,600 people and covers an area of approximately 50 square kilometers. Although surrounded by the Kotlas District, Koryazhma is an independent urban district and does not belong to the district administratively.
The history of Koryazhma dates back to 1535, when the Koryazhma St. Nicholas Monastery was founded by the monk Longin. After the October Revolution of 1917, the monastery was closed, and its lands were repurposed for agriculture. A major turning point came in 1953 with the construction of a large pulp and paper mill, which spurred the settlement’s rapid development. In 1957, it became an urban-type settlement, and in 1985, Koryazhma was granted official city status.
Koryazhma’s economy is dominated by the pulp and paper industry. The city is home to a branch of Ilim Group, one of Europe’s largest pulp and paper producers. The mill, launched in 1961, remains the city’s backbone, providing most of the jobs for the local population.
The Vychegda River is navigable, with seasonal passenger services connecting Koryazhma to Kotlas and Soyga. The Nizovka railway station links the city to the Kotlas–Vorkuta line. Highways connect Koryazhma to Kotlas and Syktyvkar, with regular bus routes ensuring convenient access.
Climate
Koryazhma has a humid continental climate characterized by long, snowy winters and mild, often rainy summers. The city is officially designated as part of Russia’s Far North, which shapes its distinctive weather patterns.
The average annual temperature is about +1.1 °C. In winter, temperatures frequently drop to –17 °C or lower, accompanied by heavy snowfall and overcast skies. Summers are generally mild, with average highs around +22 °C, though occasional heat waves can push temperatures higher.
Precipitation is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. Winters bring abundant snow, while summers see steady rainfall as well as occasional thunderstorms.
