About Biysk

Biysk is the second-largest city in Altai Krai and a major industrial and scientific center in southwestern Siberia. The city is situated on both banks of the Biya River, near its confluence with the Katun River, 160 km southeast of Barnaul. Biysk covers an area of 292 kmยฒ and has a population of approximately 183,800 residents.

Founded on February 29, 1708, by decree of Peter I as the Biysk fortress, the city was established to protect vital trade routes on the southeastern borders of the Russian Empire. The fortress was located on the right bank of the Biya River and became the core of modern Biysk.

Today, Biysk is a major industrial and scientific hub in southeastern Siberia, home to over 60 enterprises in the chemical, energy, machinery, metalworking, and defense sectors. Biysk Thermal Power Plant-1 is one of the largest thermal power stations in Siberia.
