About Ust-Ilimsk

Ust-Ilimsk is a city in Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, situated on both sides of the Angara River, about 20 km downstream from the confluence with the Iya River. It serves as the administrative center of Ust-Ilimsky District but forms a separate municipal entity with urban district status.

The city is divided into two parts: the Left Bank (Old Town) and the Right Bank (New Town). It has a population of around 79,570 people and covers an area of 202.3 km². Ust-Ilimsk was founded in 1966 during the construction of the Ust-Ilimsk Hydroelectric Dam and gained city status in 1973. Its name comes from the Iya River, a tributary of the Angara.

Ust-Ilimsk’s economy is primarily based on the forestry and energy industries. It is one of Russia’s centers for pulp and paper production. The city is connected to the regional capital via the Ust-Ilimsk–Bratsk highway and a railway branch from Khrebtovaya to Ust-Ilimsk.
