About Westende
Westende is a seaside town in the municipality of Middelkerke, located in the province of West Flanders, Belgium. It lies along the North Sea coast, approximately 13 kilometers (about 8 miles) southwest of Ostend and 16 kilometers (around 10 miles) northeast of De Panne.
Westende is also relatively close to major Belgian cities: about 77 kilometers (48 miles) from Ghent, 129 kilometers (80 miles) from Anderlecht, and 131 kilometers (82 miles) from Antwerp. The town has a population of approximately 5,575 people and covers an area of about 9 square kilometers (around 3.5 square miles).
The name “Westende” comes from the Dutch “west-ende,” meaning “western end.” The town was originally located at the western tip of the former island of Testerep, which eventually merged with the mainland. The first documented mention of Westende dates back to the year 1087, and in 1196 it became an independent parish. In 1600, the Battle of Nieuwpoort took place near the town, involving Spanish and Dutch forces and resulting in significant destruction.
In the early 19th century, Westende began to develop as a seaside resort, inspired by English coastal towns. British aristocrats and young industrialists visited the town for healthful sea bathing and social events.
Today, Westende is a popular holiday destination along the Belgian coast, known for its wide sandy beaches, charming cafés and restaurants, and a variety of cultural events. Visitors can choose from numerous accommodation options, including hotels, guesthouses, and campsites.
