About Kagoshima
Kagoshima is the lively capital of southern Kyushu — a sunny, palm-fringed city with an active volcano as its backyard neighbour. Nicknamed the “Naples of the Eastern World” for its bay setting, mild climate, and volcanic backdrop, it offers a perfect mix of urban energy and subtropical relaxation. Locals are famous for their open-hearted friendliness, love of shochu (sweet-potato spirit), and pride in their samurai heritage — this was the home of Saigo Takamori, the “last samurai”.
Thanks to Sakurajima’s constant activity, the city is dusted with fine volcanic ash almost daily (umbrellas are sold for “ash rain”), yet people take it in stride. Kagoshima is also the gateway to Yakushima’s ancient cedar forests (UNESCO), the rocket launch centre in Tanegashima, and some of Japan’s best sand onsen. It’s Japan, but with a distinctly southern, almost Hawaiian vibe.
