About Perth

Perth is the largest city and capital of Western Australia, located on the country’s western coast. As of 2024, the Greater Perth metropolitan area has a population of about 2.14 million people and covers roughly 6,400 km² (2,470 sq mi). Perth is the fourth most populous city in Australia after Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

The city stretches along the Swan River and the Indian Ocean in the southwest of Australia. It lies on the Swan Coastal Plain, a flat strip of land between the ocean and the Darling Scarp to the east. The Swan River flows through the city and empties into the ocean at Fremantle. Perth is geographically isolated from other major Australian cities—for example, Adelaide and Sydney are thousands of kilometers away.

Perth’s economy is strongly tied to the natural resources and mining industries of Western Australia. The region is a global hub for iron ore, gold, and nickel extraction, as well as energy production, metallurgy, and processing. Other key sectors include technology, trade, finance, construction, and education. Tourism is becoming increasingly important, attracting visitors with beaches, nature, historic districts, festivals, national parks, and cultural events.

The city is served by Perth Airport (PER), located about 12 km (7.5 mi) northeast of downtown. Perth’s suburbs and regional towns are connected through a network of highways, railways, buses, and commuter trains operated by Transperth. Fremantle Port serves as the region’s main seaport, handling cargo and cruise ships.

Climate
