About Irkutsk Oblast

Irkutsk Oblast is part of the southeastern Siberian Federal District of Russia and belongs to the East Siberian economic region. It borders Yakutia to the northeast, Krasnoyarsk Krai to the west, Tuva to the southwest, Buryatia to the south and east, and Zabaykalsky Krai to the east.

The region covers an area of 774,846 km² and is home to more than 2.34 million people. Its administrative center is Irkutsk, located on the banks of the Angara River near the confluence with the Irkut River, just 66 km north of Lake Baikal.

Major cities of the oblast include Irkutsk with about 611,000 residents, Bratsk with 224,000, Angarsk with 221,000, Ust-Ilimsk with 79,600, Usolye-Sibirskoye with 74,700, and Cheremkhovo with about 54,000 residents.

The economy of Irkutsk Oblast is based on energy production, engineering, non-ferrous metallurgy, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries, woodworking, and agriculture. Tourism also plays an important role.

The region is rich in natural resources, with deposits of gold, oil, gas, coal, iron ore, potassium and rock salts, mica, and rare metals. Hydropower plants, including the massive Bratsk Dam, supply electricity both locally and beyond.

Climate

Irkutsk Oblast has a sharply continental climate, with extreme daily and annual temperature fluctuations.

Winter is long, severe, and relatively dry. January averages around −17 °C (1 °F), though temperatures can drop below −40 °C (−40 °F).

Summer is short and warm, with July averaging about +20 °C (68 °F), though heat waves can push temperatures to +37 °C (99 °F). Night frosts are not uncommon even in summer.

The region receives around 470 mm (19 in) of precipitation per year, most of it falling in summer. With a high number of sunny days, Irkutsk Oblast rivals even Crimea in sunshine hours.
