The monument to Emperor Alexander III is located on Karl Marx Street on the right bank of the Angara River, in Irkutsk’s Right-Bank District. It was originally erected in 1908 as a gesture of gratitude to the emperor, who had issued the decree to build the Trans-Siberian Railway. In 1920, the monument was demolished by the Soviet authorities, and in 1963 a concrete pyramidal spire known as the “Monument to the Pioneers of Siberia” was installed in its place. Only in 2003 was the monument to Alexander III restored. The bronze statue weighs about 4 tons and stands 5.5 meters (18 feet) tall. One side of the pedestal is decorated with an eagle clutching the imperial decree in its talons.
