Astrakhan Kremlin and October Square Live Cam, Astrakhan
The live webcam shows the Astrakhan Kremlin and October Square in the city of Astrakhan, Russia.
The Astrakhan Kremlin is an ancient fortress in the heart of the city, a unique monument of 16th-century military architecture, and one of Russia’s most significant historical and cultural landmarks. It stands on a high island hill surrounded by the waters of the Volga River, the Kutum River, and the Tsarov Canal, which gave it a strong defensive advantage and made it an important outpost in the southeast of medieval Rus. Today, the Kremlin is part of the Astrakhan State Museum-Reserve and is protected by the government as a monument of federal significance.
Construction of the Astrakhan Kremlin began in the late 16th and continued into the early 17th century. Built of white limestone and fired brick, it was designed to defend Astrakhan against threats from the Ottoman Empire and the Crimean Khanate. The fortress is triangular in shape, with its pointed end stretching southwest. The walls, made of white limestone, reach up to 10 meters (33 ft) in height and 5.2 meters (17 ft) in thickness. Each tower was built with several levels and stairways, allowing for circular defense.
The Kremlin complex includes more than 20 historic structures built between the 16th and early 20th centuries. Among them are the Assumption Cathedral, Trinity Cathedral, the Prechistensky Gate, the Nikolsky Gate with its chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the Red Tower, the Kirillovskaya Chapel, and many others. The Astrakhan Kremlin is the city’s main symbol as well as a major cultural and tourist center. Its territory hosts exhibitions, guided tours, and cultural events throughout the year. This webcam, installed at 10 Turgeneva Street, provides views of Admiralteyskaya Street, the northern wall of the Astrakhan Kremlin, and October Square (Ulyanov Family Square).
