The Severodvinsk Bridge is a steel drawbridge over the Northern Dvina River, linking the city center with the left-bank districts and providing both road and rail connections. The design of the bridge began in 1958 under the supervision of the Leningrad Institute of Transport Bridge Design (Lengiprotransmost). Construction lasted six years, and on November 5, 1964, the bridge was officially opened to traffic. This event marked an important milestone in the region’s transportation infrastructure, as it provided the first direct overland connection between Arkhangelsk and the “mainland.
The Severodvinsk Bridge is a combined structure featuring a two-lane highway, a single-track non-electrified railway, and a pedestrian walkway. Its total length is 1,094 meters, with a clearance height of 13.4 meters above the water. The bridge includes an 88-meter draw span with a vertical lift mechanism to allow ships to pass. It is recognized as the northernmost drawbridge in the world. To support navigation, the bridge is usually raised at night, typically between 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.
The bridge plays a vital role in the region’s transport system, carrying both road traffic and daily rail operations. Up to 60 passenger and freight trains cross it every day, highlighting its strategic importance to the economy and logistics of the Arkhangelsk region. Since its opening, the Severodvinsk Bridge has undergone several major repairs due to wear and tear. Beyond its practical function, it is also regarded as a symbol of engineering achievement, connecting the banks of the Northern Dvina and supporting the development of Arkhangelsk and its surrounding areas.
