About Mecca

Mecca (Makkah al-Mukarramah), located in the Hejaz region of western Saudi Arabia, is the holiest city in Islam and the birthplace of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). With a resident population of about 2.4 million, the city swells to over 10 million during Hajj and Ramadan. Non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the city center, making it a unique and deeply sacred place.

Mecca has been a spiritual and commercial center for over 1,400 years. The Kaaba, a cube-shaped building inside the Grand Mosque, is the direction Muslims face during prayer (Qibla) and the focal point of Hajj โ€” the annual pilgrimage that every able-bodied Muslim must perform once in their lifetime. The Grand Mosque is the largest in the world and can accommodate up to 4 million worshippers during peak times.

Under Saudi Vision 2030, Mecca is undergoing respectful modernization: new hotels, expanded mataf (circumambulation area), high-speed Haramain railway connecting Mecca and Madinah, and improved facilities for pilgrims while preserving the cityโ€™s sanctity. The iconic Abraj Al Bait (Mecca Royal Clock Tower) dominates the skyline and serves as a landmark for millions of visitors each year.

Climate in Mecca

Mecca has a hot desert climate with extreme temperatures and very low rainfall.

Summer (Mayโ€“October): Very hot and dry, with daytime temperatures often reaching 104โ€“118ยฐF (40โ€“48ยฐC). July and August are the hottest months.

Winter (Novemberโ€“March): Mild and pleasant, with highs of 82โ€“95ยฐF (28โ€“35ยฐC) and cooler nights around 64โ€“73ยฐF (18โ€“23ยฐC). This is the most comfortable time for Umrah and outdoor prayers.

Rainfall is minimal โ€” less than 4.5 inches (110 mm) per year โ€” mostly occurring in short winter showers.

The city enjoys more than 340 sunny days annually, creating bright, clear views of the mosque and surrounding mountains almost year-round.
