About Matsumoto
Matsumoto is a charming castle town nestled in the heart of the Japanese Alps in Nagano Prefecture. Often called “Castle City” or “Alps City”, it’s one of the few places in Japan where a magnificent original 16th-century castle still stands proudly in the city centre. Surrounded by 3,000-metre peaks, Matsumoto enjoys crisp mountain air, crystal-clear rivers, and some of the most spectacular scenery in the country.
With its beautifully preserved merchant quarters, world-class art museums (thanks to local artist Yayoi Kusama), craft soba noodles, and easy access to hiking, skiing, and onsen, Matsumoto is the perfect base for exploring the Alps. Locals are laid-back, the city is cycle-friendly, and it never feels overrun by tourists — even though it’s only 2.5 hours from Tokyo by Limited Express train. It’s the gateway to the famous Kamikochi valley and the Nakasendo trail.
