About Nagasaki
Nagasaki is a historic port city tucked into dramatic hills on the west coast of Kyushu. For centuries it was Japan’s only window to the world during the country’s 250-year isolation, welcoming Portuguese, Dutch, and Chinese traders. This unique history gave Nagasaki a rich blend of cultures — Catholic churches hidden in valleys, Chinese temples, European-style homes, and some of Japan’s earliest Western cuisine (castella sponge cake, champon noodles).
Despite the tragic atomic bombing in 1945, Nagasaki rebuilt itself into one of Japan’s friendliest and most peaceful cities. Locals are famously warm and proud of their resilience. With steep sloping streets, stunning night views, and a laid-back seaside atmosphere, it feels more Mediterranean than Japanese — a perfect mix of history, hope, and natural beauty.
