About Severodvinsk
Severodvinsk is home to about 157,000 residents and covers an area of 121 km². The city proudly holds the honorary title “City of Labor Valor and Glory” in recognition of its contribution to Russia’s shipbuilding industry and wartime efforts.
Located at the mouth of the Northern Dvina River, where it flows into the White Sea, Severodvinsk lies just 45 km northwest of Arkhangelsk. The city hosts the White Sea Naval Base of the Russian Northern Fleet, making it a major military and industrial hub.
The history of Severodvinsk dates back to the 9th century when Vikings first established settlements in the area. In the 12th century, it became part of the Novgorod Republic. The town grew around the medieval Nikolo-Korelsky Monastery, founded in 1419. Modern Severodvinsk began in 1936 with the construction of a large shipbuilding yard. Initially called Sudostroy and later Molotovsk, the city was renamed Severodvinsk in 1957.
Today, Severodvinsk is an important economic center focused on engineering, shipbuilding, energy, and food production. Two of its largest enterprises are the Northern Machine-Building Enterprise (Sevmash) and the Zvezdochka Ship Repair Center.
