Sardinia is the second-largest island in Italy and the entire Mediterranean Sea after Sicily. It is located in the western Mediterranean Sea, west of the Apennine Peninsula, south of Corsica, and 360 kilometers (224 miles) northwest of Sicily. The island is washed by the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea to the east, the Sardinian Sea to the west, and the Mediterranean Sea to the south.
It has a population of about 1.6 million people and covers an area of 24,100 square kilometers (9,305 square miles). Administratively, the island is an autonomous region of Italy called Sardinia.

Winters are warmer in the southern part of the island compared to the north.
