Keszthely is one of the oldest and most picturesque towns on the western shore of Lake Balaton in Hungary. It is an important tourist center of the region, known for its architecture, cultural heritage, and proximity to natural attractions. The town’s area is approximately 21 square miles (54 km²), and its population is approximately 19,000–20,000 people. Keszthely is characterized by a calm resort atmosphere and well-preserved historic buildings.
The town is located in the western part of Lake Balaton, in Zala County, approximately 118 miles (190 km) southwest of Budapest. Nearby is the resort town of Hévíz, famous for its thermal lake of the same name. This location makes Keszthely a convenient starting point for trips around the Lake Balaton region.
Keszthely’s history spans more than two thousand years. Settlements existed here as early as Roman times, as evidenced by archaeological finds. During the Middle Ages, the town developed as a trading and craft center. In the 19th century, Keszthely turned into a popular resort.

Average annual precipitation is approximately 24–26 inches (600–650 mm). Most of it falls in late spring and summer, often as brief showers and thunderstorms. The best time to visit Keszthely is from May to September. Summer offers ideal conditions for beach vacations, while spring and autumn are perfect for leisurely walks and sightseeing.
