About Sokcho
Sokcho is a charming coastal city in Gangwon Province, perfectly nestled between the Taebaek Mountains and the East Sea (Sea of Japan). With a population of about 80,000, it’s famous as the gateway to Seoraksan National Park and one of Korea’s favourite seaside getaways. Once a quiet fishing town, Sokcho gained fame through Korean dramas and its unbeatable combination of beach + mountain + fresh seafood.
Locals are laid-back and proud of their squid, crab, and hoe (raw fish). The city is incredibly easy to explore — the Express Bus Terminal is just a 5-minute walk from the beach, and public buses reach Seoraksan in 20–30 minutes. Sokcho is clean, safe, and feels far less touristy than many other Korean destinations, yet it has everything you need: cafés, hot springs, night markets, and stunning sunrises.
Climate in Sokcho
Sokcho enjoys a temperate coastal climate with four distinct seasons:
- Spring (March–May) – 8–20 °C (46–68 °F), cherry blossoms and perfect hiking weather
- Summer (June–August) – warm 22–30 °C (72–86 °F), beach season with water around 23–25 °C
- Autumn (September–November) – the best season: 10–22 °C (50–72 °F), brilliant red-orange foliage
- Winter (December–February) – cold −5 to 5 °C (23–41 °F), light snow and dramatic mountain scenery
Thanks to the sea, summers are cooler and winters milder than in Seoul.
