Sokcho Beach is one of the most popular beaches on South Korea’s east coast, located in the city of Sokcho in Gangwon Province in the country’s northeast. Stretching for about 2 km along the city’s central waterfront, the beach is known for its soft golden sand and clean, clear water. Thanks to its proximity to major bus and transport terminals, it’s a convenient destination for independent travelers.
The city attracts many visitors with its scenic views of the Sea of Japan (called the East Sea in Korea), its wide sandy shoreline, and its variety of leisure options. Sokcho Beach’s central location makes it easily accessible on foot from the Sokcho Express Bus Terminal, so you can visit without needing a rental car.
Sokcho Beach offers well-developed tourist facilities, including rest areas, sunbed and umbrella rentals, and numerous cafés and bars serving fresh seafood. Visitors can enjoy a range of water activities such as parasailing, jet skiing, banana boat rides, and kayaking. The best time to visit Sokcho is from late spring to early fall, when the water is warm and ideal for swimming. In winter, the beach draws those who prefer quiet coastal walks and spectacular sunrise views.
Several notable attractions are located near Sokcho: Seoraksan National Park, and Naksansa Temple — a historic Buddhist temple complex overlooking the East Sea. These and other natural and cultural sites can be explored on easy day trips from the city.
West of the beach begins the Oeongchi Bada Hyangiro (외옹치 바다향기로) coastal walking trail — a picturesque 1.74 km path that connects Sokcho Beach with Oeongchi Port. The route features wooden boardwalks and viewing platforms offering impressive views of the rocky shoreline and the emerald waters of the East Sea. Thanks to its stunning scenery, the Oeongchi Bada Hyangiro trail has been featured as a filming location for various Korean movies and TV dramas.
