Lake Biwa (Japanese: 琵琶湖, Biwa-ko) is the largest freshwater lake in Japan, located in central Honshu within Shiga Prefecture. Covering an area of approximately 670 km², the lake reaches a maximum depth of 104 meters. Its name comes from the Japanese musical instrument ‘biwa,’ as the shape of the lake resembles the instrument. Lake Biwa is of tectonic origin and has existed for over 4 million years, making it one of the oldest lakes in the world.

Lake Biwa plays a vital role in the region, providing water to nearby cities, serving as a popular recreation and tourism destination, and supporting a rich variety of flora and fauna. It is frequently mentioned in Japanese literature and history, with many significant historical events and battles taking place along its shores. The lake is lined with beaches, walking paths, and parks, offering scenic views of the water and surrounding mountains. Boating, fishing, and water sports are also popular activities on Lake Biwa.

On the southeastern shore of the lake lies the city of Otsu, the capital of Shiga Prefecture. One of the city’s main tourist attractions is the Flower Fountain, one of the largest fountains in the world, with jets reaching heights of up to 40 meters. The fountain is located near the waterfront and a picturesque pedestrian bridge that connects different parts of the port, creating a pleasant area for strolling and taking photos.
