Xinyi District (Chinese: 信義區) is the central business and financial district of Taipei City, home to Taipei City Hall and the Taipei City Council. It also hosts the Taipei International Convention Center and the Taipei World Trade Center, opened in January 1986, which brings together exhibition halls, conference rooms, office spaces, hotels, and more in one place. Xinyi is considered the main shopping district not only of Taipei but of all Taiwan, with numerous major shopping malls, department stores, and entertainment venues.

The district is best known for the Taipei 101 skyscraper, a mixed-use landmark that remains the tallest building in Taiwan, the 5th tallest in Asia, and the 10th tallest in the world. Rising to 509.2 meters with 101 stories, it was built between 1999 and 2003 and held the title of the world’s tallest skyscraper from 2004 to 2008.

Taipei is the capital and one of the largest cities of the Republic of China (Taiwan), a partially recognized state in East Asia. According to the official position of the People’s Republic of China, Taipei is regarded as the capital of Taiwan Province of the PRC. The Republic of China administers the island of Taiwan in the Pacific Ocean, located about 150 kilometers off the east coast of mainland China. The Taiwan Strait separates the island from the mainland. Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, lies in the Taipei Basin in the north of the island. The city covers an area of 271.8 square kilometers and has a population of more than 2.7 million.
