Kaohsiung is one of the largest cities in the Republic of China (Taiwan), located on the coast of the Taiwan Strait in the southwest of Taiwan Island. The city covers an area of 2,951 km² and has a population of about 2.7 million. This makes Kaohsiung the third most populous city in Taiwan after New Taipei and Taichung, and the second largest by area. Kaohsiung is also a major seaport and one of the country’s most important industrial centers.

The climate is hot and tropical, with distinct wet and dry seasons. The wet season, characterized by heavy rainfall, lasts from May to September, while the dry season runs from October to April. Due to the tropical conditions, annual temperature fluctuations are small. The average temperature in the hottest month, July, is about +29 °C, while in the winter months it averages around +19 °C. Some of the most famous attractions in Kaohsiung include Lotus Pond, the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, the Kaohsiung National Stadium, the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, Shoushan Zoo, and Chang Gu World Trade Center.
