Talas is the administrative center of Talas Region in western Kyrgyzstan. The city lies on the left bank of the Talas River in the Talas Valley, surrounded by the high ridges of the Tian Shan Mountains, at an elevation of about 1,280 meters (4,200 feet) above sea level. It is roughly 315 km (195 miles) from the national capital, Bishkek. The population is around 32,000.
Talas has a long and storied history. In the 7th–8th centuries, the region was a key stop on the Silk Road, linking East and West. The name “Talas” likely comes from an ancient Turkic word meaning “fertile land.” Over the centuries, the area has retained its agricultural importance. The modern city was founded in the late 19th century during Russian settlement of Central Asia and has since grown into a regional hub.
Surrounded by scenic mountains and lush valleys, Talas enjoys unique natural conditions. It is a major agricultural center in Kyrgyzstan, producing wheat, barley, potatoes, fruits (especially apples), and a variety of vegetables. The region is also known for its bean production, a significant export for the country. Livestock farming plays a vital role in the local economy. In recent years, Talas has become a trade and logistics hub for agricultural goods.
The climate is continental, with sharp annual and daily temperature swings. Average summer temperatures are around 77°F (+25°C) but can reach 95°F (+35°C), while winter lows may drop to 5°F (-15°C). Precipitation is uneven, with the most falling in spring and autumn. One of the region’s top natural attractions is the Talas Ala-Too Range, part of the Tian Shan system. It draws hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, and tourists year-round.
