Seoul Station is the main railway station in Seoul and one of the most important transportation hubs in the country. Together with the subway lines running beneath it, the station forms a major transit interchange in the heart of the capital.

The station serves the Gyeongbu and Honam railway lines, as well as the AREX line that connects Seoul to Incheon International Airport. It also provides access to Seoul Subway Lines 1 and 4, the Gyeongui–Jungang Line, and is connected to Hangang-daero, Toegye-ro, Tongil-ro, Huam-ro, and the Lotte Outlets shopping complex.

Seoul’s central station originally opened on July 8, 1900, when the Gyeongui Line was extended north of the Han River. The first station building was a small wooden structure of about 33 m². The current station building, considered an architectural landmark, was completed in 1925 in a Renaissance style. Today, Seoul Station serves KTX high-speed trains, AREX (airport express), ITX services, and subway trains. The AREX line provides a direct link to Incheon Airport, making the station especially convenient for travelers. It is also integrated with the city’s bus network and includes an express bus terminal.

The plaza in front of Seoul Station is a bustling public space surrounded by modern buildings and transport infrastructure. It serves as the station’s main entrance as well as a popular meeting and rest area for both locals and visitors. The plaza is connected to the well-known Seoullo 7017 elevated pedestrian walkway, a landscaped urban trail that attracts many tourists.

The surrounding area features numerous hotels, shops, restaurants, and shopping centers, including Lotte Outlets and Lotte Mart, offering everything from groceries to electronics. Just a short walk away is Namdaemun Market — one of Seoul’s oldest and most historic markets, established in 1414 during the Joseon dynasty.
