Ikebukuro (Japanese: 池袋, Ikebukuro) is a major commercial and entertainment district located in the northwestern part of Tokyo, within Toshima Ward. The area developed around Ikebukuro Station, one of the busiest transportation hubs in Japan.
The name “Ikebukuro” literally translates to “pond-bag,” a reference to the marshy terrain and small bodies of water that historically existed in the area. In the 20th century, Ikebukuro became a key railway and subway junction: Ikebukuro Station grew into one of Tokyo’s main transfer points, served by JR Yamanote Line, private railways, and multiple Tokyo Metro lines.
Ikebukuro is known for its mix of large shopping centers, entertainment complexes, cafés, restaurants, and its vibrant pop-culture atmosphere—anime and manga shops, themed cafés, and galleries. This unique blend makes the district both a major commercial area and a cultural hotspot in northern Tokyo.
Ikebukuro Station is served by the JR Yamanote Line, JR Saikyō Line, JR Shōnan-Shinjuku Line, the private Seibu-Ikebukuro and Tobu Tōjō lines, as well as Tokyo Metro’s Marunouchi, Yurakuchō, and Fukutoshin lines. This extensive network provides convenient access from many parts of Tokyo and nearby prefectures.
Ikebukuro’s main attractions include Sunshine City—a large entertainment and shopping complex featuring the Sunshine 60 skyscraper, an aquarium, a planetarium, a hotel, and numerous stores and restaurants—along with Otome Road and several busy commercial streets, including Sunshine 60 Street.
Sunshine 60 Street is one of the district’s main pedestrian arteries, connecting Ikebukuro Station with Sunshine City. Thanks to its central location and heavy foot traffic, it has become one of Ikebukuro’s key hubs for shopping and entertainment.
