Asakusa Shrine (Japanese: 浅草神社, Asakusa Jinja), also known as Sanja-sama (三社様), is one of Tokyo’s oldest and most significant Shinto shrines. It is located in the Asakusa district of Taito Ward, right next to the famous Buddhist temple complex Sensō-ji, forming one of the city’s most historic and visited cultural areas.
The shrine was built in 1649 by order of Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. It is dedicated to three men—brothers Hinokuma and their friend Haji no Nakatomo—who, according to legend, discovered a statue of the bodhisattva Kannon in the Sumida River, leading to the founding of Sensō-ji. In their honor, Asakusa Shrine is revered as a symbol of the connection between Shinto and Buddhist traditions during the Edo period.
Remarkably, the shrine survived the bombings of World War II, unlike much of Asakusa, making it one of the few original 17th-century structures still standing in central Tokyo. In 1951, it was officially designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
Asakusa Shrine is best known for the Sanja Matsuri festival, held annually on the third weekend of May. It is one of Tokyo’s largest and most vibrant traditional celebrations, attracting more than two million visitors.
