Makurazaki is a coastal city in Kagoshima Prefecture, located in the southern part of Kyushu. The city lies on the shore of the East China Sea, about 50 kilometers south of Kagoshima City, the regional administrative center. Makurazaki covers an area of roughly 75 km² and has a population of about 22,000 people. It borders the cities of Minamikyushu, Minamisatsuma, and Ibusuki.

Makurazaki is known as one of Kagoshima’s most important fishing and seafood-processing centers. The local fishing industry is especially famous for producing katsuobushi (dried bonito), a specialty for which the city is renowned throughout Japan. Agriculture also plays a key role in the region, with farmers cultivating rice, tea, soybeans, vegetables, and tobacco.

Ocean Hotel Iwato (空と海を臨む宿 オーシャンホテル岩戸) is a cozy oceanfront hotel offering panoramic sea views along the Makurazaki coast. Built on an elevated coastal slope, the hotel provides a peaceful atmosphere and scenic ocean vistas away from the noise of the city. Guests can choose from several room types, including traditional Japanese washitsu (和室) rooms, Western-style rooms, and mixed Japanese-Western accommodations.

All rooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi, a television, air conditioning, private facilities, and basic hotel amenities. The hotel’s restaurant serves fresh seafood dishes, including locally caught fish, one of the region’s culinary highlights. The menu focuses on ingredients sourced from Makurazaki and seasonal produce from Kyushu.

Ocean Iwato Hotel also features large traditional public baths (daikyokujo, 大浴場) and open-air rotenburo (露天風呂) baths with impressive ocean views. A spacious parking area with around 70 spaces is available for guests, making the hotel especially convenient for travelers exploring Kyushu by rental car or on their own.
