Kamikochi Kappa Bridge is a scenic suspension bridge in Japan, spanning the Azusa River in the heart of the Kamikochi highland valley in the Japanese Alps on the island of Honshu. It is located within Chūbu-Sangaku National Park, a region known for its exceptional natural beauty, crystal-clear waters of the Azusa River, and stunning mountain views, including peaks such as Hotaka and Yakedake.

The bridge takes its name from ‘kappa,’ the water spirits of Japanese folklore said to inhabit rivers and lakes. Its construction played a significant role in the early development of Kamikochi as a mountain tourism destination in the early 20th century. Today, Kappa Bridge serves not only as an important pedestrian crossing over the Azusa River but also as a symbol of the region, frequently featured in photographs and postcards.

The bridge is surrounded by dense forests, alpine meadows, and unique vegetation, including birch, beech, and larch trees. In autumn, the foliage turns vibrant colors, making the area especially appealing to visitors. The Kamikochi region is also known for its diverse wildlife, including Japanese macaques and serows. Kamikochi attracts thousands of visitors each year for its excellent hiking and mountain trekking opportunities.

Kamikochi can be reached by bus or by train with a shuttle transfer. Popular departure points include the cities of Matsumoto and Takayama. Kappa Bridge is just a few minutes’ walk from the Kamikochi Bus Terminal. The bridge and the surrounding area are open to visitors from late April to mid-November. Spring and summer offer mild weather, while autumn is especially popular for its breathtaking colorful foliage.
