Aktau (Kazakh: Aqtau, meaning “White Mountain”) is a city in southwestern Kazakhstan, the administrative center of the Mangystau Region, the country’s largest seaport on the Caspian Sea, and an important industrial and transport hub for the area. As of 2024, the city’s population is approximately 267,000 people.

The city is situated on the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea, on the Mangystau Peninsula. The terrain is a plateau-like plain with characteristic rocky formations. The climate is sharply continental and arid, featuring hot summers and moderately cold winters. Strong winds are characteristic of the region, especially during the winter and spring.

It was founded in 1961 as a settlement for a mining and chemical plant. It was initially called the settlement of Aktau, then from 1964 to 1991, it was named Shevchenko in honor of the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko, who served his exile in this area. It received city status in 1963. Its current name was restored in 1991.

Aktau is known for a addressing system unique to the CIS; the city lacks traditional street names. All development is organized around micro-districts (residential blocks) with sequential numbering. Addresses are given as a micro-district number and a building number.

The foundation of the economy is formed by Kazakhstan’s largest seaport, the oil and gas sector, and related service enterprises. Aktau International Airport provides connections to other regions of the country and abroad. The city is a key link in the International Trans-Corridor “Western Europe-Western China.”
