Shibuya Crossing is one of the largest and most famous diagonal pedestrian crossings in Japan, with nearly 2 million people passing through it every day. It is located in Tokyo’s special ward of Shibuya, near the statue of the loyal dog Hachiko, about 7 km (4.3 miles) southwest of the city center. When the pedestrian light turns green — for 55 seconds — it activates simultaneously in all four directions, sending massive streams of people across the intersection. At peak times, more than 3,000 pedestrians can cross at once.

Shibuya Crossing is one of Tokyo’s top attractions and a major symbol of the city, drawing countless visitors from around the world. It became globally famous after appearing in movies such as The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift and Lost in Translation. Crossing the intersection at rush hour has become a popular experience for both locals and tourists. The area features three giant LED screens on the surrounding buildings along with numerous billboards and illuminated advertisements. Because of this vibrant atmosphere, Shibuya Crossing is often compared to Times Square in New York City.
