Bandai Bridge is a reinforced concrete arch bridge that spans the Shinano River in Niigata. It is an important transportation link and a notable architectural landmark, connecting the city center with the Bandai district, from which the bridge takes its name.
The original wooden bridge once served as a toll crossing, becoming free to use in 1900. After a fire in 1908, it was rebuilt using more durable materials. The present reinforced concrete bridge was completed in 1929 and quickly became a symbol of the city’s technological progress.
The bridge is 306.9 meters long and 22 meters wide. Its granite cladding and decorative lamps give it an elegant, monumental appearance. In 2004, the lamps were restored according to the original design. The bridge is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
Bandai Bridge is popular among both locals and visitors. It offers comfortable pedestrian walkways and scenic views of the riverfront and the Niigata skyline. In the evening, the bridge is illuminated, creating a pleasant atmosphere for walking and photography. It is also known for its structural resilience, having withstood the 1964 earthquake.
