Balykchy (Kyrgyz: Балыкчы) is a city in the Issyk-Kul Region of Kyrgyzstan, located on the northern shore of the western tip of Lake Issyk-Kul. It sits at an elevation of about 1,640 meters (5,380 feet) above sea level in northern Kyrgyzstan, 175 km southeast of Bishkek. The city has a population of around 51,300.
Balykchy is a key transportation hub, as it marks the starting point of the highway connecting Kyrgyzstan’s northern region with the south via the Torugart Pass on the Chinese border. The name “Balykchy” means “fisherman” in Kyrgyz. From 1989 to 1992, the city was called Rybachye; it was then renamed Issyk-Kul before receiving its current name in 1993.
Historically, Balykchy has been an important fishing and transportation center. Its development began in the early 20th century when it became a vital link between Bishkek and Kyrgyzstan’s eastern regions. During the Soviet era, it was a major industrial hub focused on fish processing, building materials production, and ship repair on Lake Issyk-Kul.
Today, Balykchy remains one of Kyrgyzstan’s leading centers for fishing and fish processing, as well as a critical logistics and transportation node. It plays a significant role in the country’s transport network, thanks to its railway station and the highway connecting it to Bishkek and other regions.
Tourism is also an important part of the local economy. Balykchy mainly serves as a transit point for travelers heading to the resort areas around Lake Issyk-Kul and the popular tourist destinations along the lake’s eastern shore, where numerous resorts and guesthouses are located.
