Aktau is the largest port city in Kazakhstan and the administrative center of the Mangystau Region. It’s located on the Caspian Sea coast in the country’s southwest. The city sits in a desert zone at an elevation of -8 meters (below sea level), making it one of the few settlements worldwide with such a unique geographic position. Aktau has a population of approximately 200,000 people and covers an area of about 27 km².

The city’s origins trace back to the mid‑20th century, when rich uranium deposits were discovered in the region. Initially, it was a settlement known as Guryev‑20. Later, it was renamed Aktau (meaning “White Mountain”) and then Shevchenko, in honor of the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko. In 1991, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the city reverted to its original name, Aktau. The local economy is primarily driven by the oil and gas industry, transportation, and logistics. Aktau plays a key role in exporting hydrocarbons and supporting maritime traffic through the Port of Aktau.

In recent years, Aktau has grown in popularity among tourists thanks to its mix of natural and historical attractions.
