Bokonbaevo (Kyrgyz: Бөкөнбай) is a large village in the Ton District of Kyrgyzstan’s Issyk-Kul Region, located on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul in the eastern part of the country. Situated at an elevation of about 1,750 meters (5,740 feet) above sea level, it lies roughly 140 km southwest of Karakol and 200 km southeast of Bishkek. Bokonbaevo serves as the administrative center of the Bokonbaevsky Rural District. The village has a population of around 13,000. Agriculture and livestock farming form the backbone of its economy. The area is where Lake Issyk-Kul meets the Tian Shan Mountains, creating stunning natural landscapes and unique climatic conditions.

The climate in Bokonbaevo is mild continental, shaped by the lake and the surrounding mountains. Summers are warm and dry, with temperatures ranging from 68°F to 86°F (+20°C to +30°C), while winters are mild and snowy, with temperatures occasionally dropping to 14°F (-10°C). Annual precipitation is low, with most falling in autumn and winter. The combination of snowy winters and warm summers makes the area appealing for year-round tourism.

The village is named after the renowned Kyrgyz poet, akyn (improvisational bard), and manaschi (epic storyteller) Bokon Bayalinov, who made significant contributions to Kyrgyzstan’s culture and literature. Historically, Bokonbaevo developed as an agricultural and craft center on the lake’s southern shore. While the southern coast has traditionally been less tourist-oriented than the north, its authenticity and natural beauty are increasingly drawing visitors.

Key attractions near Bokonbaevo include: Lake Issyk-Kul, with its pristine beaches and crystal-clear water, Skazka Canyon (also known as Fairy Tale Canyon), famous for its striking landscapes and colorful clay formations, Tup Pass, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Bokonbaevo hosts several annual ethnic festivals, such as the Nomad Festival.

Traditional Kyrgyz eagle hunting with golden eagles is a popular activity in the region and a major draw for tourists. Tourist infrastructure is actively developing: the village offers guesthouses and small hotels, and local restaurants serve authentic Kyrgyz dishes like beshbarmak, kumis (fermented mare’s milk), and boorsok (fried dough).
