Niigata is the largest city and the administrative center of Niigata Prefecture, a major seaport, and the biggest city on the west coast of Honshu. The city is located on the coast of the Sea of Japan in the Chūbu region, about 300 km northwest of Tokyo. Niigata covers an area of 726 km² and has a population of around 800,000 people.
Niigata is often associated with Japan as a ‘snow country,’ with the popular ski resort of Yuzawa located about 100 km south of the city. Key attractions include one of Japan’s largest aquariums, Marinepia Nihonkai, as well as numerous temples and fish markets.
The city has a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and moderately warm winters. Average temperatures reach around 28°C (82°F) in July and about 2°C (36°F) in January, the coldest month. Niigata experiences strong winds from the Sea of Japan and significant precipitation throughout the year. In winter, the city receives more snowfall than cities like Moscow or Oslo.
