Dharahara Tower (also known as Bhimsen Tower or Bhimsen Stambha) is a historic landmark in the heart of Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. More than just an architectural monument, it stands as a symbol of the resilience of the Nepali people, having survived multiple earthquakes and been fully restored. The tower is located in the Sundhara area, near the ceremonial grounds of Tundikhel, and rises approximately 61.5 meters (202 feet) with nine floors. From its top, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley and the Himalayas.
The tower was originally built in 1832 (some sources say 1835) by Bhimsen Thapa, one of the most influential prime ministers of Nepal during the Shah dynasty. It was constructed in honor of Queen Lalit Tripurasundari, Thapa’s niece, and originally served as a military watchtower. Signals were sent from the top to warn of approaching threats, and residents were gathered there for official announcements. Reconstruction began in October 2018 under the Nepali government, and the full restoration was completed in September 2024. Since November 2024, the tower has been open to visitors on a paid basis and is accessible daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Kathmandu is the largest city and capital of Nepal, located in the central Kathmandu Valley at an elevation of 1,350 meters (4,430 feet) above sea level. Surrounded by Himalayan peaks, it serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of the country. The city is home to over one million people and is one of the oldest cities in the world, with a history that dates back to approximately 720 CE, partially preserved in myths and legends.
Today, Kathmandu is the main entry point for tourists visiting Nepal and a hub for multi-day treks into the Himalayas. The city and valley feature numerous attractions, including Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa, Durbar Square, Kastamandap, Pashupatinath Temple, Rani Pokhari, the Royal Palace, Budhanilkantha, the Thamel tourist district, colorful markets, and more. The city is served by Tribhuvan International Airport, which offers flights to destinations across Asia, the Persian Gulf, and South Africa.
