Lukla Airport (Tenzing–Hillary Airport) is a regional airport serving the town of Lukla, located in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal, not far from Mount Everest. Sitting at an altitude of about 2,860 meters (9,383 feet) above sea level, it is considered one of the most dangerous airports in the world due to its mountainous terrain, short runway, and rapidly changing weather conditions. Flights operate only during daylight hours and in clear weather, as conditions in this high-altitude area can shift within minutes.

The runway is just 527 meters (1,729 feet) long with a steep 12% gradient. One end of the runway runs directly into a mountainside, while the other drops off into a deep gorge. Despite the risks, the airport remains the region’s main air gateway and a vital hub for climbers and trekkers heading toward Everest.

The town of Lukla serves as a key stopover for travelers and the starting point for most expeditions to the summit of Mount Everest (8,848.86 meters / 29,031 feet). With no road access to the area, Tenzing–Hillary Airport is virtually the only way to reach Lukla.
