Ala-Too Square is the main square of Bishkek, located in the very heart of the capital of the Kyrgyz Republic. Around the square are several important government and cultural buildings, including the State Historical Museum, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Culture, Information and Tourism.

At the center of the square stands the Monument to Manas, erected in 2011 to honor the legendary hero of the Kyrgyz epic Manas the Noble (Aykyol Manas). Nearby rises a 45-meter (148-foot) flagpole with the National Flag of Kyrgyzstan, where a ceremonial honor guard changes regularly — one of the most photographed moments on the square.

Adjacent to Ala-Too Square is Oak Park, the city’s oldest and most central park, founded in 1890. Close by is also the Square of Friendship between the Peoples of Kyrgyzstan and Russia, featuring the Monument of Friendship of the Peoples, erected to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kyrgyzstan’s incorporation into Russia.

Bishkek is the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan, with a population of about 1 million people. It is situated in the center of the Chuy Valley, approximately 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of the border with Kazakhstan.
