Dongdaemun Design Plaza — commonly known as DDP — is an architectural landmark and major cultural hub in Seoul, recognized as one of the most iconic modern structures in South Korea. Designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid, it opened on March 21, 2014, and quickly became a symbol of Seoul’s innovative design and urban culture. DDP is located in the Jung-gu district, just north of the city’s central business area, on the former site of the Dongdaemun Stadium. Its construction played a key role in the district’s revitalization.

DDP is famous for its futuristic design, featuring the world’s largest three-dimensional amorphous structure. The exterior is made up of 45,133 uniquely shaped aluminum panels, and both the interior and exterior surfaces lack traditional flat walls. The concept of ‘fluidity’ creates a sense of continuous movement, where ceilings blend seamlessly into walls, and walls merge into floors to form a flowing, organic space.

The complex includes several major zones: Art Halls (for exhibitions, conferences, and large events), the Design Museum (showcasing contemporary and traditional design), the Design Lab (a space for startups and innovative projects), and the Dongdaemun History & Culture Park, which features galleries, museums, and a memorial dedicated to the former Dongdaemun Stadium.

DDP hosts exhibitions, educational programs, and major events such as Seoul Fashion Week and seasonal light festivals. It has become a key destination for designers, artists, and tourists alike. Many local initiatives promote sustainability and recycling through themed exhibitions. Its location near major shopping malls and traditional markets also makes DDP one of the most popular cultural attractions in Seoul.
