Uwajima (Japanese: 宇和島市; English: Uwajima) is a coastal city in Ehime Prefecture, located in the southwest of Shikoku Island along Uwajima Bay, part of the Seto Inland Sea. The city covers an area of about 468 km² and has a population of roughly 73,000. It is known for its scenic shoreline, fishing harbors, hilly terrain, and the rich history and culture of the region.
Uwajima originated as the castle town of the Uwajima Domain in the late 16th century during the Sengoku period. It later became the residence of the Date clan, who ruled the area throughout the Edo period. Uwajima Castle, built in 1595, has survived to the present day and remains a symbol of the city’s historical heritage. During the Edo period, the city flourished as an important cultural and administrative center, renowned for its craftsmanship and trade.
The economy of Uwajima has traditionally relied on agriculture, fishing, and aquaculture. The city is known for its citrus cultivation, including the local “Uwajima Mikan” mandarins, as well as pearl farming carried out along the coastal waters. Fishing and port activities continue to play a significant role, supporting local markets and limited commercial shipping.
Major attractions in Uwajima include Uwajima Castle—one of Japan’s few remaining original castles—the 19th-century traditional Japanese garden Tenshaen (天赦園), and the Uwajima City Date Museum, which highlights the history of the Date clan and the region’s development during the Edo period. The city is also known for its cultural events, notably the annual Uwajima Ushioni Festival held in July. Local cuisine features fresh seafood and citrus-based dishes, drawing visitors from across Japan.
