Nagasaki International Airport (Japanese: 長崎空港, English: Nagasaki Airport, IATA: NGS, ICAO: RJFU) is a civil airport located in the city of Ōmura, Nagasaki Prefecture, on the island of Kyushu. It sits about 18 km (11 miles) northeast of central Nagasaki and serves as one of the major air hubs of the Kyushu region, handling both domestic and international flights as well as cargo operations.
The site originally housed Ōmura Airfield, a military airbase established in 1923. Construction of the new airport on an artificial island in Ōmura Bay began in 1972, and the facility officially opened on May 1, 1975. It became one of the world’s first large airports built entirely on reclaimed land over water. The former Ōmura Airfield was transferred to the Japan Self-Defense Forces in 2011 and now operates as Omura Air Base.
The airport has a single runway measuring 3,000 meters (9,843 feet). The terminal is located on the man-made island of Mishima in Ōmura Bay and is connected to the mainland by the Mishima Ōhashi Bridge, which is approximately 970 meters long. Situated only about 2 meters above sea level, Nagasaki International Airport plays a vital role in the transportation network of Nagasaki Prefecture and the greater southern Kyushu region, providing air links to major Japanese cities and selected international destinations.
