Hamamatsu is a city in Japan located on the Pacific coast in Shizuoka Prefecture on the island of Honshu, 253 km southwest of Tokyo and 115 km southeast of Nagoya. The city was officially established on July 1, 1911, and its historic center is Hamamatsu Castle, built in 1570 on a high hill. Today, the castle houses a history museum featuring a miniature model of the city as it looked 400 years ago, and it is surrounded by a beautiful traditional Japanese garden.

Hamamatsu is one of Japan’s major centers for the automobile and motorcycle industries, as well as the country’s largest producer of musical instruments. The city is home to manufacturers such as Roland Corporation, Kawai, Yamaha, Honda, and Suzuki. Hamamatsu is also known as the “City of Music,” thanks not only to its instrument makers but also to its distinguished music college and its world-renowned orchestra.

The city’s main attractions include Hamamatsu Fruit Park, the Flower Park, the Museum of Musical Instruments, Hamamatsu Castle, the city observatory, and the Nakatajima Sand Dunes on the Pacific coast — the third-largest sand dunes in Japan.
