The Big Buddha (Big Buddha Koh Samui) is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks, located on the small islet of Koh Fan, which is connected to the northeastern coast of Samui by a causeway. Standing 12 meters (39 feet) tall and covered in gold paint, the statue symbolizes enlightenment and spiritual strength. Because of its height, the statue is visible even from the air when approaching the island by plane.
The monument was inaugurated in 1972 with the intention of protecting the island from natural disasters and has since become a symbol and talisman of Samui. It depicts Buddha in the Mara posture, with his right hand reaching toward the earth, representing the moment of enlightenment. At the base of the statue is a staircase of 60 steps, adorned with dragons and serpent-like Naga figures. The staircase leads to a viewing platform that offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and the sea. Visitors must remove their shoes before ascending.
Locals and pilgrims regularly visit the temple to perform rituals, bringing flowers, fruits, and lighting incense. Tourists can observe these ceremonies daily. Visiting early in the morning is recommended, as it is less crowded and the morning rituals create a serene atmosphere. The temple is particularly beautiful at night when the statue is illuminated, creating a striking and memorable sight. There are also small shops where visitors can buy souvenirs, amulets, and religious items.
The Sunset restaurant, from which the live stream is broadcast, is located on the coast near the Big Buddha statue. The restaurant serves a variety of Thai dishes featuring fresh seafood, as well as international cuisine.
